June 2, 2018 – Today we had a great family on board that flew from Utah to San Juan for a day just to go sailing with us with the hopes to see whales. And see whales we did! Just before we arrived at East Point we heard there was a group of orcas that appeared to be harassing two humpback whales, “Split Fin” and “Zig Zag” but the scuffle had just ended when we got there. The HB’s appeared to be ok. There were two orca families present, the T65A’s and the T49A’s. After some traveling towards Sucia, the orcas started having a T Party. Socializing, breaching, tail slaps, and excellent vocals on our hydrophone. It was hard to leave this playful group but we had to start heading back. While we drifted near shore eating supper, we heard the calls of the Peregrine Falcon – we scanned the cliffs and found 3 chicks! Amazing! And finally as we sailed by Low Island we heard a bunch of commotion between many black oyster catchers and 9 bald eagles! The eagles were battling over some type of meal floating in the water and the oyster catchers didn’t want the eagles near their nests. It was the best eagle watching we ever had.
