June 24, 2018 – We sailed south through Turn Island pass and over towards Lopez to meet the T49A’s and T65A’s who had come in through Cattle Pass and were traveling slowly north. We sailed goose-winged alongside breaking off at Turn Island when we were surprised by a humpback heading south into the fog against the current. We then continued down wind again north with the traveling/resting group of orcas. After passing Yellow Island we witnessed non-stop goofy behavior including backward breaches and tail slaps particularly from the young calves. We left the whales at Green Pt to explore New Channel with its emerald mirrored waters, kelp forests, and currents. After drifting through the Cactus Islands we sailed on to Flattop Island where 10+ bald eagles were in queue to feast on a steller sea lion carcass on the high tide line.
