July 4, 2018 – After watching the July 4th parade we got ready to set sail around the San Juans. As we left the harbor we heard reports of transient orcas, the T37A’s, near Lopez heading south. We sailed across to Shaw Island passing Flat Point and on to Upright Head. People were paddling knee deep off Spencer Spit as we drifted by between the spit and Frost Island. The whales traveled far south into Lopez Sound before turning back to the north as we met them. We traveled alongside back to Upright Head and onto Flat Point. At one point it looked like they were going into Friday Harbor before slowly traveling north in San Juan Channel. They milled for some time north of Pt Caution and we left them for a slow light wind sail back to Friday Harbor to watch the fireworks show.
