July 17, 2018 – South on the ebb with a good sail to Big Rock and tacked back to Harbor Rock. Drifted out through Cattle Pass passing Deadmans Island and tacking again to Whale Rocks. Lots of harbor seals hauled out with their pups on the low tide. Eagles were watching the tide roll away. Special surprise for us was a lone male steller sea lion high on the southeast corner of Whale Rocks. We crossed over Salmon Bank looking for minke whales and continued to Granny’s Cove and Eagle Pt. We met the J16’s and J17’s approaching Eagle Pt. The J16’s continued to Salmon Bank and we watched the J17’s engaged in playful behavior. As the wind and sea conditions picked up we sheltered inside of Long Island for our supper. The bald eagle chick was perched above the nest and the two adult parents were nearby. After passing through confused seas in Cattle Pass we enjoyed the serenity of calm waters of Upright Channel wing on wing. After dropping two folks off at the Orcas Ferry Landing we enjoyed a fiery sunset as we came through Wasp Pass and sailed home.
