August 1, 2018 – The first of the month and began with a truly spectacular sailing with whales and wildlife day. Wing on wing from Point Caution through our favorite places North through Spring Pass to White Rock. Harbor seals soaking up the sun to warm their bodies and eagles watching all things. We took a right turn East to the tall cliffs of Point Disney and a fast sail up the South shoreline of Waldron to Bare Island where cormorants stood to attention on the sun baked stone. Onto Patos Island where we cruised the coastline to Alden Point Lighthouse. At Alden Point we got our first sight of the Js and Ls, All 23 of J pod minus L87 and 18 of the L Pod whales. We all travelled quickly to East Point passing the old fog horn building which houses Moby Dolls skull. From there they spread out across Boundary Pass and we sailed alongside to Java Rocks. A lot of the males in J pod were playfully socializing including J47 Notch. We noticed several sea snakes during play time. J35 was there traveling close to shore and with her family of the J17s close. J35 Tahlequah was still carrying her deceased newborn calf, but not visible to us from our distance. We stopped to visit Java Rocks and then went to meet a group consisting of L55s and others before sailing South to Ripple Island, the Cactus Islands and New Channel for our supper. Sunset as we passed Jones and Yellow Islands with a close hauled sail to Point Caution.
