August 3, 2018. Sailed North. Harbor seals and Black Oyster Catchers off Low Island. Inside Yellow Island passed Little McConnell Island and through Spring Pass. We headed up Presidents Channel on news of a Humpback Whale at Point Doughty. We passed many Eagles and quite a few eagle nests on the Orcas Island forested shoreline as well as an old Lime Kiln from the late 1800s hidden in the trees. We met the humpback whale and sailed alongside close to thew Orcas shoreline. We left the Humpback to sail to Point Disney tall clifface and on to White Rocks Seal haul out and Cormorant Colony. Then on to Flattop Island National Wildlife Refuge where Pigeon Guillemots were at their rocky nesting sites and whistled beautiful very high pitched notes. Eagles watched us from every island. Coming down towards Spieden Island we met the humpback whale BCY0409 ‘Yogi’ again and he began tremendous sideways cartwheels and held his tail flukes high in the air. The strongest muscle in the animal kingdom generated loud slaps on the water. We said good bye for a fast sail back to Friday Harbor.
