August 6, 2018 – Short morning sail and we raised the sails for wing on wing downwind across San Juan Channel to Shaw Island. Tacking through the maze of small islands between Shaw and Orcas we saw many Harbor Seals resting on the rocks of the reefs and warming their bodies in the morning sunshine. A Great Blue Heron was on Low Island. We anchored to the North of Yellow Island in the lee and used our Bullfrog tender to ferry our family onboard to the East spit of Yellow Island. Walking the trails of Yellow Island with high stands of Fireweed and Pacific Madrone trees with red peeling bark. Beautiful views over the islands and we met the new Caretaker at the West end of the island. We watched harbor seals and pups hauled out on the beach having fun rolling over the pebbles into the waves. Back on board we decided to extend the trip and to sail to Flattop Island where we found several Bald Eagles and a Belted Kingfisher. A beautiful morning sail in the San Juan islands.
