August 14, 2018 – We sailed North with news of Transient Orcas coming down Georgia Strait from Anniversary Island. Low tide by Nob Island and Harbor Seals were resting on the rocks of Shirt Tail Reef. We hugged the shoreline of Jones Island State Park through Spring Pass and continued North to visit to the coastline of Flattop National Wildlife Refuge and White Rock where many Harbor Seals were resting in the mornings warmth. Passed Sandy Point we took the Waldron Island shoreline on to Skipjack Island National Wildlife Refuge where likewise many Harbor Seals were resting on the rocky ledges in protected waters. Crossing into Canada we headed for Boiling Reef and met the Transient Orcas at Tumbo Island. T36 with daughters 36As and 36Bs and their kids – three generations. Currents were very strong. Gulls gathered at bait balls and the Orcas began chasing Harbor Porpoise. They were successful, 36A1 (born 2005) did the majority of the lunging. It was exciting to watch the hunting in the strong currents and whirlpools. We left them North of Patos island to explore the Patos shoreline before heading for Point Doughty of Orcas Island. We hugged the beautiful forested shoreline of Orcas Island down Presidents Channel. Sunset was eerie and diffuse in the smoky haze of the nations forest fires.
