Meeting Biggs Orcas at Lawrence Point

August 19, 2018 –  Sailing with T87, T124A1, T124D’s including T124D1 & T124D2

We sailed a beam reach across to Shaw island expecting to sail North to meet Transient Orcas North of Orcas Island. However reports indicated they were moving quickly on the ebb so we changed course to follow the Shaw coastline South and take Upright Channel to Upright Head on Lopez Island and on to Rosario Strait by way of Peavine Pass. We sailed North in Rosario to the Peapod Rocks seeing Harbor Seals with pups and a Bald Eagle and immature Bald Eagle. We continued North and close to shore at Lawrence Point, where the view opened up to layers of distant headlands shaded in decreasing tones with the smoky haze. We met the Transient Orcas T124A1 (22yrs) and her aunt T124D (also 22year old) with 2 offspring and T87 – a 56 year old male. We turned to sail alongside heading South. After passing the PeaPod Rocks they split into two groups, T124A1 traveling with T87 and the T124Ds separate. T124Ds hunted a Harbor Porpoise outside of Peavine Pass and at that point were rejoined by T124A1 and T87. We left them for our return journey via Upright head and passing inside of Canoe Island. The sun faded into a red ball in the smoky haze about an hour before sunset.
