August 25, 2018 – We headed North with a good sail from Point Caution across the channel to Shirt Tail Reef. Harbor seals were hauled out resting and warming their bodies as we tacked back across the Channel and head up to New Channel. We came close to shore on the North side of Spieden seeing Bald Eagles and bumped out to visit the harbor seals in the Kelp Forests of the Cactus islands before coming in to the high bluffs where we found a Peregrine Falcon. We then picked up a report of 2 Humpback whales nearby and quickly came back down New Channel to head towards Jones Island. BCX0870, ‘Scoop’ was with a new calf circling the deep waters between Flattop and Jones Island. With slow sailing we were able to have some beautiful views and hear their blows as they surfaced together. We left them slowly moving towards Point Disney and explored the coastline of Flattop Island National Wildlife Refuge. We headed South with stronger winds finding calm in the lee of Jones Island for our supper before returning via Nob Island Pass.
