August 31, 2018 – Raised the sails in the harbor and quickly sailed on a beam reach across to Shaw Island. We then tacked and downwind wing on wing was very pleasant. We were listening to Reports of Transient Orcas at Thieves Bay with others at Matia. We passed many Harbor Seals resting and warming on Low Island then tacked to pass between Yellow and McConnell Islands before continuing North. Currents were running strong at Green Point as we entered New Channel to cruise the North side of Spieden Island. A couple of Eagles watched us sail by wing on wing and a Harbor Seal was hauled out and resting quite close to Mouflon sheep who were foraging at the shoreline. We sailed across Haro Strait on news of the T36As and T99s Transient Orcas earlier reported as at Thieves Bay were now approaching Mandarte. Wind increased and we had a fast sail with reefed headsail down to Halibut Island. Meeting the Transient Orcas we dropped all sails and drifted as they played/hunted in the kelp forest and close to shore. As they began to move South we reefed our mainsail and travelled alongside. With swells of 3 feet they breached and cartwheeled their way towards Darcy Island. We left them for a fast sail back across Haro Strait taking the South side of Spieden Island. We took Spring Pass staying out of strong winds by threading inside of McConnell and Cliff Islands while we had supper. Wind picked up again as we headed into port to meet the 6:30 ferry.
