September 1, 2018 – Half day sail extanded. We set sail from Friday Harbor with news of Transient Orca families the T34s, T37 and T37Bs heading South from Spieden Channel after being found at Small Pox Bay earlier in the day. We enjoyed a leisurely sail across san Juan Channel and North passed Low and Yellow Islands with Harbor seals hauled out on Low island. While sailing passed McConnell Island we could see that the whales had turned North and so we continued through Spring Pass meeting the Orcas to the South of Flattop Island. They were in a tight resting group moving slowly North. We broke off to explore New Channel and spend some with quiet drifting moments at the Cactus Islands, New Channel kelp forests and Ripple Island. We rejoined the resting Transients for a while and then left them on news of the T36As and T99s who’d been found at Skipjack Island. We met these whales near Sandy Point, Waldron Island, and they continued West while we had our supper. We moved on to Point Disney of Waldron Island and while we skirted the dramatic cliff face to the point met the T37As who’d come south from East Point in Canada. After circling Cowlitz Bay they also headed West in Boundary Pass so we continued to cross Presidents Channel and visit the shorline of Orcas Island. An evening breeze from the South allowed us a good sail from Nob Island across San Juan Channel to end a perfect day, a sail with whales in the San Juan Islands
