Transient Orcas T87 and the T90s in San Juan Channel

September 8, 2018 – Shortly after setting sail we met up with transient orcas known as T87 and the T90’s. We traveled alongside as they swam north from Friday Harbor along the San Juan Island shoreline. They were making slow progress in the middle of Spieden Channel when we left them to cruise the south side of Spieden Island. After passing the harbor seals on Sentinel Rock we met two bald eagles watching a harbor seal with a fish. We drifted through New Channel and through the Cactus Islands quietly as the seals slept in the kelp beds. Nearby rain made for interesting skies as we sailed across to the north side of Flattop National Wildlife Refuge. Black oyster catchers and harbor seals watched us drift by. Through Nob Island pass and today we used the barbecues to grill peaches which were delicious.
