September 21, 2018 – We sailed north and right at the harbor entrance we came upon a couple of bald eagles and a pod of porpoise. A good start to a wildlife packed sail. Today we noticed harbor seals hauled out on the east spit of Yellow Island – a first for us. They’re usually on the west spit. Further north in North Pass we came across four Pacific loons together.
To keep under a good sail we took the south side of Flattop Island. East to west the shoreline had many harbor seals hauled out warming their bodies. We continued west to New Channel hugging the Spieden shoreline counting bald eagles. Onwards to Stuart Island to Lovers Leap where we met a humpback named “Scratchy” (BCY Unknown).
He/she paralleled with us into Boundary Pass. We caught some good wind for a good fast sail with a few more views of “Scratchy” as we came around Stuart Island. We took Ripple Pass through the Cactus Islands into New Channel on our sail home. In North Pass we found a large group of ancient murrelets. This is one area we frequently see them. The sun dropped below the clouds to illuminate Little McConnell Island in rich warm colors.
