Great day sailing to Flattop Island

May 31, 2019 – We drifted through the pass inside of Turn Island with a backdrop of the Olympic Mountains to the harbor seals warming in the sunshine. Beam reach to Lopez Island where we picked up two more passengers.

Wing on Wing on the flood we made good time cruising the Shaw Island shoreline. Several black oystercatchers were busy on Low Island and we had a close pass to view the wildflowers of Yellow Island. Sailed close to shore of Jones Island State Park where the light caught the forest in a magical way.

As we approached Flattop Island National Wildlife Refuge we enjoyed our supper. Flattop was alive with wildlife. High pitched whistles of pigeon guillemots involved in mating and nesting, bald eagles, and bird song. The sunshine lit up the colorful display of wildflowers. A fast close hauled sail south back to Friday Harbor and onto Lopez near sunset.
