June 7, 2019 – Great winds for sailing. With an extreme low tide we began with exploring Turn Island Pass. Many harbor seals warming on the rocks as we passed by. A Great Blue Heron passed overhead looking pre-historic . We seem to be seeing notably few Blue Herons this year which is concerning.
We picked up speed to sail to Flat Point catching the flood current into Upright Channel. We’d heard that Biggs Orcas family T49As were Northbound in Rosario. Upright head caught the warm evening light and we were lucky to see and hear the calls of two Peregrine Falcons. Hearing the T49A Orcas had flipped South but that T124C Orca was East Bound in Spieden Channel we changed our course into Harney Channel.
Great sailing and great light in Harney Channel today. We served supper after sailing the flood current through Pole Pass with Captain Barbara at the helm.
Our view opened wide as we came out of Spring Pass and sailed North to meet T124C, a 27 year old lone male Biggs Orca, off Pt Disney, Waldron Island. He travelled a slow circle appearing to be deciding his next destination. Leaving him at Sandy Point we made fast time south via Flattop and Jones. Came out of the wind by drifting inside of Nob island so we could light the candles on a birthday cake. Gorgeous sunset tonight with a beautiful sail across to Point Caution arriving Friday Harbor in the twilight.
