August 4, 2019 – What an incredible encounter with the T46’s and T137’s. It was a rush getting there, but a relaxing sail back home with several minke encounters on both Hein and Salmon Banks.
When we arrived near the orcas suddenly an orca rammed a harbor porpoise into the air making a huge splash. A hunt began just as we got there. T46E with a few others came in to join the hunting. It was a dramatic encounter with the females chasing after the porpoise including about 4 hits and it was finally over. The orcas milled for a long while with maybe one or two squeaks on the hydrophone before grouping up and slow traveling south. It was our first time seeing the T46’s this year and we’ve been looking forward to it. How special it was to spend part of our day with these magnificent animals. To witness their power while hunting is really incredible.
On our sail home we passed over Hein Bank and spotted a minke whale a few times before continuing onto Salmon Bank. Drifting on the bank we saw two minke whales milling in the area. With the tide in our favor we continued onwards and up through Cattle Pass in the strong current.
We had a fast sail over 8+ knots and enjoyed the quiet moments watching the diving birds and life passing by.
