July 31, 2020 – It was a beautiful evening sail. Shortly after leaving the harbor we spotted a bald eagle. Low Island had lots of harbor seals, cormorants and a black oystercatcher hanging out. Wing on wing we sailed towards Flattop Island where the pigeon guillemots were stealing the show. It was awesome hearing their calls as they flew back and forth up to their cliff side dwellings while others gathered in large groups swimming together. Harbor seals watched us sail by as their pups rested beside them. The lighting showed off the gorgeous layers of time in the rock formations of this amazing National Wildlife Refuge.
We decided to head towards one of our favorite areas in New Channel to cut in between the Cactus Islands. Calm waters reflected the island colors and the bull kelp forest glistened in the evening light. Cruised towards the north side of Spieden Island to hug the coastline down spotting a few Sika deer along the way. From Jones Island we had a great sail in San Juan Channel back to Friday Harbor with a pink sunset illuminating the sky.
