October 3, 2020 – The channel was full with a thick layer of fog as we cast off from the dock. We hugged the San Juan shoreline getting glimpses of the forest as we went. Sailing wing on wing with winds building we had a great sail up to Green Pt where we found several Steller sea lions hanging out in the bull kelp. Areas of fog were lifting and the sun came out illuminating our way through New Channel. We spotted many bald eagles along the Spieden forest and the harbor seals were hauled out on the Cactus Islands enjoying the sunshine.
Before cutting across to Flattop Island we reefed the main sail in preparation for the stronger winds down San Juan Channel. On the north side of Flattop Island we found many harbor seals hauled out hiding from the wind while soaking up the sun against a backdrop of gorgeous geology. With the sun creeping lower into the sky we made tracks for home. Pointing into wind we had an exhilarating fast sail heeled over as we tacked our way back to Port.
And we spotted something exciting worth noting – a large group of birds flying overhead which appeared to be cranes – possibly sandhill cranes… a first for us
