March 29, 2021 – We started out with a Southerly direction with the wind and tide in our favor but after sailing through the pass inside of Turn Island with harbor seals and eagles we heard of Transient/Biggs Orcas Northbound from the Canadian border off Lime Kiln Point. So we altered course to the North finding some shelter from the wind by sailing close to the beautiful Shaw Island coastline and weaving through the Wasp Islands.
We had a fast sail south of Jones Island to Spieden Channel ducking into the back eddies to reach Battleship Rock. Venturing out into Haro Strait we searched for the large group of Biggs consisting of T65 and her son T63 (Chainsaw), T10’s, T36A’s, T49A’s and T71’s. We had a distant view of the T10’s and T65 with Chainsaw Northbound at speed along the border.
Coming in to the Stuart Island shoreline we met the T36A’s and T49A’s traveling quickly on the flood. Rainbows showed in their blows as the wind and waves built nearing Turn Point lighthouse. We left them Northbound at speed and took shelter sailing South close the Stuart Island shoreline.
We drifted the flood through New Channel and came down to Green Point of Spieden Island counting 79 Steller sea lions with 1 California. It was a little warmer on a nice beam reach back down inside Yellow and Low Islands. And nearing Friday Harbor we were greeted by a fun loving group of Steller sea lions who seemed to connect with Captain Skye.
