May 7, 2021 – We moved quickly out of Friday Harbor with news of the T123 Biggs Orcas Northbound San Juan Channel. Cloudscapes were spectacular with updrafts and downdrafts and we sailed under blue skies between squalls missing the heavy rain showers. We met the Orcas at Battleship Island and sailed alongside as they ventured in towards Sentinel Rock, the Spieden shoreline, nosed into New Channel and then South of Stuart and out into Haro Strait. We continued along the Stuart Island shoreline where the forest was beautifully lit and honeycombed sandstone cliffs led us to Lovers Leap. Rounding Turn Point Lighthouse we found a Totem Pole standing in the forest and a bald eagle in a nest where we’ll be watching for chicks later in the year. Circling the island we dropped down passed Ripple Island into the Cactus Islands and New channel where harbor seals were hauled out in large numbers and sunset light began. Stellers sea lions rested on the rocks as we sailed by beginning a fast beam reach sunset sail back to Friday Harbor.
