May 27, 2021 – Today we sailed around the world. Across the equator and through the tropics we saw it all. It began as a serene drift through Turn Island Pass admiring the sights with the extreme low tide. With a crew of women from Texas I figured we’d take it pretty easy today and stay within everyones comfort zone. However there were Biggs orcas, T65A’s with T77 and T77E, at Eagle Point and they appeared to be stalled out milling and socializing.
So we picked up the pace with a sail in the back eddies of Griffin Bay down to Cattle Pass. After the Cormorant nesting colony of Goose Island we fought the flood to clear Cattle Point Lighthouse and on hearing the orcas were Northbound changed plans to come out to Salmon Bank and look for Minke whales. However, I had underestimated the women from Texas and they voted to run the West Side and catch up with the orcas.
As the flood became favorable our speed picked up to 10-11 knots sustained so we zoomed passed Lime Kiln Lighthouse meeting the Biggs orcas at County Park. Squalls over Canada came our way and we watched whales under umbrellas through a sudden downpour rounding the currents of Kellet Bluff. By Battleship Rock the sun lit the world and sails were reefed as the winds picked up behind us.
We left the orcas at Danger Shoal as the current and winds propelled us down Spieden Channel. Reefed sails and a beam reach gave us racing speed with a sustained ride on the edge of the comfort zone. Exhilarating and beautiful we cut inside Yellow and Low Islands before the final sleigh ride to Point Caution.
