May 28, 2021. Extreme tides with the full super moon. And winds reported to be strong down South. We headed North with a reefed main and conditions were glassy at the Wasp Islands as we circled Nob Island, Low and Yellow Islands where harbor seals were hauled out warming themselves. With a report of the T65A’s Southbound in Rosario Strait we cut through Pole Pass to head that way. However conditions looked grim and the whales were ways away in Bellingham Channel so we resumed a Northerly course to Spring Pass.
We were relaxing drifting in the calm emerald waters of New Channel when we got another report of orcas Northbound in Haro Strait. We found the T46B’s minus T46B1’s and the T100’s near the Canadian Border East of D’arcy Island. At first they were traveling about 1/4 mile from the Canadian border, but changed course as we arrived towards Henry Island which was a relief. We paralleled their zig zag course under downwind sail hearing their blows as they surfaced together. We cut through Battleship Rock and left them near Danger Shoal. Wind had picked up and a fast flooding tide took us briskly along the Spieden South shoreline seeing many bald eagles and mouflon sheep and a fallow deer. We kept close to the San Juan coastline on our return to Friday Harbor.
