June 9, 2021 – After leaving Friday Harbor we decided to head south. Raised sails and had a pleasant drift around Turn Island where harbor seals hauled out (including the naked seal) and the raccoons foraged at low tide. We had a report of a group of Biggs/transient orcas on Middle Bank trending towards Cattle Point, so we made haste down San Juan Channel looking for back eddies in Griffin Bay to get out of the flooding current. There were many harbor seals hauled out on Goose Island and the cormorants were busy tending to their nesting sites. As we rounded Cattle Point Lighthouse we made our way offshore of Eagle Pt and met the T65A’s and two orca brothers, T125A and T128, who were traveling with them. The group was in slow resting travel mode as they made their way closer to the San Juan shoreline and headed up island. As they reached Pile Pt it looked like a hunt was underway as the orcas breached, cartwheeled and tail lobbed. Without much delay they continued on their way and socializing began as they passed Land Bank and Lime Kiln Point State Park exciting onlookers. T65A2 and T128 spent some time goofing around together. Their pace slowed right down as they drifted at about 2 knots northbound very close to shore. After they reached County Park we decided it was time for us to keep on going to make it back to Friday Harbor in time for the 6:30pm ferry. We sailed wing on wing passing Kellett Bluff and didn’t use the engine until we reached Friday Harbor. Winds were fairly constant our entire way back giving us a thrilling close hauled sail all the way down San Juan Channel. This half day sail was extended for whales and we had a fantastic full day circumnavigating San Juan Island.
