June 11, 2021 – Todays sail was on hold due to weather but by 5pm the rain had cleared and our folks gathered ready for adventure. Leaving Friday Harbor winds changed from moment of calm to a dark ripple on the water indicating a sudden gust of up to 20 knots was imminant. Skies were clearing but dramatic to the North and we sailed on a fast flood tide to the Wasp Islands. I had thoughts to sail through Wasp Pass and Harney Channel to circle Shaw Island. However the current floods to the West in Wasp Pass and the winds were fickle changing direction. So we changed course and caught the flood to drift between Islands and return to a Northerly course at Yellow Island. We sailed through Spring Pass to look up Presidents Channel and then circled Jones. Black skies to the North and West were ominous and the blue skies were overtaken for awhile testing our resolve as we sailed a fast close hauled sail across San Juan Channel. Tacking we crossed again before we gained some tranquil sailing time passing Yellow Island to round Nob Island before our final leg back to Point Caution. Sunset light with ominous cloudscapes and fiery lighting on the forested islands – all echoed our exhilarating sail. Our passengers deserve a certificate on every trip but this one for sure.
