June 20, 2021 – We left Friday Harbor with a plan to circumnavigate San Juan Island. Moderately strong winds were forecast from the north with an ebb through much of the day so we planned to head north to have following seas and tail wind in Haro Strait. After a fast sail across San Juan Channel we cut through the Wasp Islands taking the narrow passes and checking out each little islet. Clearing the southwest side of Jones we made our way down New Channel along the north side of Spieden Island. Mouflon sheep foraged along the shoreline and bald eagles watched from the tree tops. On the west side of Henry Island we found a bald eagle chick peering out of the nest and a peregrine falcon perched on his cliff. We took the west side of the island with a mission to view the properties and landmarks along the coastline. Cutting down to Salmon Bank from Eagle Cove we found a minke whale – a familiar minke with a nick on the leading edge of the dorsal fin. Came back into shore passing Cattle Point Lighthouse and the cormorants nesting on Goose Island. As we rounded Turn Island we spotted a beautiful great blue heron. A gorgeous day on the water.
