June 23, 2021 – Half day sail south. Full moon close to the earth, a Supermoon today, and the tidal exchange was dramatic. Low tides as we cut through Turn Island exposed the clam shell beaches and racoons were clam digging on the tide line. The beaches were showing on the Lopez coastline from Big Rock glacial erratic down. Black oystercatchers were foraging on the goose neck barnacle encrusted rocks and purple starfish visible (which is good to see after the previous years demise in their numbers). Turkey vultures grouped together on the cliff near Deadman Island. Young Steller sea lions and harbor seals on Whale Rocks. We drifted by Long Island and checked the eagle nest before heading out to Salmon Bank. Quite a number of rhinoceros auklets and we found and had good views of the minke whale we know as Minke Mouse (named by our passengers a few years ago). Pelagic, Brandts and double-crested cormorants are on their nests at Goose Island.
