July 4, 2021 – As we were leaving the dock we had reports of a family of orcas known as the T65A’s in our area near Henry Island so we planned a course in that direction. We headed up San Juan Channel and along the north side of Spieden Island in New Channel which happened to be where the orcas were headed. However, the orcas changed course and went west along Stuart Island. Following behind we caught up just before they crossed the Canadian border which still happens to be closed by Canada. We stayed for a bit getting some distant views as the orcas continued on their way until we did the same wrapping around the north side of Stuart. As we kept watch for the orcas it looked as though they were paralleling the border in Boundary Pass so we decided to head that way in the hopes we’d get lucky. But, not this time as the orcas turned back towards South Pender Island. Oh whale it was worth the try. We cut through Johns Pass and the Cactus Islands, down to Jones and through the Wasp Islands with views of an amazing sunset. We arrived back to Friday Harbor in time to watch the July 4th fireworks show.
