July 22, 2021 – Evening half day sail. We had a great sail south on the ebb. After crossing to Big Rock we hugged the Lopez coastline down to Cattle Pass. Sailed by harbor seals at Deadman Island and Steller sea lions at Whale Rocks. There was a humpback whale south MacArthur Bank but it looked out of range for us so we were thinking of looking for minke whales on Salmon Bank. However, then we heard that the humpback was moving north for the third time that day over the bank so we changed course to see it. Winds and tide were favorable for a fast sail south. We think the humpback was MMY0079 “Scratchy” but cannot confirm without tail fluke photos. The humpback vanished after the third set of surfacings so we headed for Long Island. Sunset with a full moon rise was spectacular.
