September 8, 2022 – With moderately strong winds we had reefed sails as we headed north up San Juan Channel. One of the whale watching boats found a pod of orcas off the northern tip of San Juan Island after investigating a report that came over the radio. The orcas were milling for a little while, but as we got closer the orcas traveled very fast towards Flattop Island. With long dives and stealthy behavior amidst the challenging sea conditions, boats were having a very difficult time keeping track of where the orcas were. Multiple direction changes kept us all on our toes. We finally caught up to the orcas just south of Pt Disney, Waldron Island, and the orcas were in a consistent travel pattern heading up Presidents Channel. The pod was identified as the T35A’s and the T38A’s. There was a very tiny calf in the mix which looked very young. The whales began zig zagging again and eventually headed north towards Saturna Island. We spun around and came back down Presidents Channel to check out Pt Disney, White Rock, and the wildlife in New Channel before heading back down San Juan Channel to Friday Harbor.
