Biggs/Transient orcas T18’s with T49A’s hunting a Sea Lion outside Friday Harbor

April 27, 2023 – Biggs/Transient orcas T18’s with T49A’s were busy hunting a Steller sea lion outside of Friday Harbor for at least 4 hours. We caught the tail end of the hunt. It was an action packed high intensity scene with orcas lunging and leaping at speed and the sea lion doing everything he could to survive. After awhile the orcas had for the most part slowed down pointing into the current standing by. Occasionally they’d group up and begin lunging again then settle back into relaxed surfacings pointed at the sea lion.
The sun had set and light was fading when we headed back to port and they hadn’t given up yet. The sea lion was taking refuge near Reid Rock. He was a strong fighter and we were in awe by his stamina and will to survive. We sure hope he lived to tell the tale. He certainly deserved it after the night he had.
Note: T49A1 and T49A2 not present. T49A3 and T19C were goofing around about 1/2 mile north during the hunt not participating.
