Evening short sail

June 3, 2024 – With moderately strong winds we sailed through and out of Friday Harbor and had a fast sail over to Shaw Island. We pulled out of the wind for a while exploring Hicks Bay and found a bald eagle looking out across the channel. After tacking and meandering out of the calm waters of the bay we picked up wind for a fast sail over to the cliff face of Turn Island. Several harbor seals were hauled out on the rocks in the pass and we explored the nearby rocks for any signs of a sea otter who’d been spotted here earlier in the day. Passing close to a kelp reef on Turn Rock and we sheeted the sails tight for a close hauled sail against the current North in San Juan Channel. Cutting in close to shore to find back eddies in the ebbing current and we saw a bald eagle who took flight with a fair sized starry flounder. Crossing back with the current to Friday Harbor we ran into a rain shower we’d been dodging earlier so brought out the rainbow umbrellas.
