Biggs/Transient Orcas T46B1’s Inter-Island

June 14, 2024 – We scooted our sail earlier on account of Biggs/Transient orcas coming north up San Juan Channel. The family is known as the T46B1’s, three orcas total. We were hoping they’d come up to meet us outside Friday Harbor, but they had other plans in turning into Upright Channel. It look us awhile to catch up as they were moving steadily up the channel at about 6.5 knots, but thankfully they dithered a bit before taking Cayou Channel allowing us to catch up. They kept their speed up the whole encounter as they made their way to Wasp Passage before eventually heading North. We left the whales to have a relaxing sail through the Wasp Islands and back to Friday Harbor.
