Humpback whales BCX0854 “Europa” and BCY0324 “Big Mama” BREACH FEST

June 29, 2024 – We had a whale of a day as we watched two very active humpback whales north of East Point. BCX0854 “Europa” and BCY0324 “Big Mama” were the stars of the show. Just as we arrived on scene “Europa” began to breach, do multiple chin slaps, pectoral flipper slaps, and spinning back flips. “Big Mama” joined in the fun with a twisting breach and a couple of peduncle throws (cartwheels). It was EPIC. After the excitement settled we sailed on as the rain moved in. As we passed the beautiful Skipjack Island we saw many harbor seals hauled out including possibly the black matte colored naked harbor seal lacking pelage we used to know. It’s been 2 years since we spotted it. As we rounded White Rock there were two bald eagles perched over more harbor seals with the stunning Pt Disney backdrop. At Flattop Island more harbor seals rested and a bald eagle stood on the National Wildlife Refuge sign. The bald eaglet on Cliff Island is getting bigger and more visible as it stands looking out of its nest.
