Full Day Sail with 2022 calf of BCY0995 “Smiley”, and BCX1675 “Thunderbolt”

August 5, 2024 – Today our adventure took us inter-island and through Thatcher Pass to meet a pair of very young humpback whales as they were northbound in Rosario Strait. They were identified as the 2022 calf of BCY0995 “Smiley” and the 2023 calf known as BCX1675 “Thunderbolt” to mother BCX1675 “Strike”.  Both of these calves had beautiful white undersides to their tail flukes. We had some awesome views as we sailed alongside at the perfect speed to match theirs. They took Bellingham Channel between Cypress and Guemes Island and slowed down quite a bit as they meandered north. After a fun encounter we left the whales to continue our sail over the top of Cypress around to Tide Pt before sailing across the Strait. Cut through Obstruction Pass down to Upright Head and had a sail across back to Friday Harbor.
