BCY1278 “Hendrix” and BCY1080 “Taurus” in Swanson Channel

August 10, 2024 – With news of a playful pair of humpback whales northbound in Haro Strait we kept our speed up and headed that direction. We cut through the Wasp Islands, hugged the west side of Jones Island, the north side of Spieden Island, and the south side of Stuart Island. We me the humpbacks just north of Turn Point Lighthouse as they crossed into Canada. The pair were identifed as BCY1278 “Hendrix” and BCY1080 “Taurus” – both are whales we’ve never “met” before. Paralleling the whales we had some beautiful views and enjoyed the cascading waterfall effect as they raised their tails before their deep dive. We left the whales heading up Swanson Channel and returned via the north side of Stuart Island, through Johns Pass, between the Cactus Islands, and hugged the San Juan coastline back to Friday Harbor.
