T49As in San Juan Channel

August 20, 2024 – With Biggs orcas T49A’s (minus T49A1 and T49A2) approaching Friday Harbor from the north we made haste for our departure. As we neared the harbor entrance the orcas were coming in. We had a great view as they surfaced and traveled next to the Customs dock and took the shoreline around the busy harbor leaving through the south entrance. Passing Turn Island they hit the strong flood current crossing over to Shaw Island and headed back north. They appeared to chase a harbor seal out of Hicks Bay before continuing up to Tift Rocks where they circled the rocks hunting in very shallow water. Their next stop was Yellow Island where they made repeated close passes of harbor seals hauled out on the west spit. After scaring them into the water the two youngest orcas circled Yellow Island numerous times for the next hour. The others moved on to hunt the other islands of Wasp Passage. We dropped our passengers off at Orcas Island and on the return at dusk the two youngest were still circling Yellow Island.
