Sailing with the T60s in San Juan Channel

August 24, 2024 – As we left Friday Harbor we heard a report from a ferry of orcas westbound from Anacortes so we made a course towards Upright Channel to go inter-island. Winds were good and current was in our favor and we heard the whales known as the T60’s (minus T60D and T60E – also no T2B present) were now entering Thatcher Pass. We came into the cliff face of Upright Head and as we drifted to the point the orcas came around the corner. They moved fast down the channel and the winds and the current were now against us, but we had some good views as they came around Canoe Island and into San Juan Channel. Under sail to the Northwest whales were faster than us and continued at speed all the way to Spieden Channel. We watched them disappear in the distance as we sailed from Pt Caution to the Wasp Islands seeing the sunset as we tacked our way back down the channel.
