September 1, 2024 – After casting off we headed north and encountered a group of 8 orca moving south from Yellow Island. The Biggs/Transient orcas were identified as the T46’s, T124A1 and T124D’s. We were pretty excited to see all the whales, but especially excited about the T124D’s as this is a group we rarely encounter. The whales were traveling slowly and we kept under sail paralleling them until they woke up with the fast moving flood current by Reid Rock. They picked up speed and we saw some socializing as they traveled in one big group. When we came around Turn Island a chilly wind was coming up the channel so we broke away to sail across to check out Fisherman’s Harbor, Lopez Island. Upon our return we hugged the Shaw Island coastline for a bit before sailing across the channel back to Friday Harbor.
